Deronda, I loved this—and your song made me want to get up and stomp my feet! What a joyful expression of finding your way to yourself.
I recognize that blank page after divorce, though it can take time to see possibility where we first see loss. Your honesty about gratitude moved me: we can treasure what grew afterward without pretending the ending didn’t hurt.
And yes to still becoming! At 76, I’m discovering new work, new interests, and parts of myself I haven’t met before. What a wonderful contribution to our month of thresholds. 💜🎶
Thank you so much, Judy! I am so thrilled you resonated with the article, and also that the song made you want to move! :) :) :) I am finding more joy than I could ever imagine when people respond to the music I am blessed to create.
Deronda, I absolutely LOVE this! Especially, “the realization that I could dream again.” Not adjust the old dream or try to salvage what you thought your life was supposed to be, but actually dream again. 💜 I think sometimes we forget that we get to choose, and then choose again. One chapter ending doesn’t mean we end with it. And we don’t even have to wait for something to fall apart before we’re allowed to choose something new! We can be perfectly happy with where we are and still decide there is something else we want to see, do, experience, or become. There is just SO much life available to us. I love that at 35 you looked at that blank page and realized it was yours to write on, and now at 60 you’re still writing on it. That may be my favorite part of this whole piece. We are never finished choosing who we want to be or where we want to go next. 💜✨
You are absolutely right, Andrea! I was so trained that my life was going to be just a certain way, and the realization I could shape the rest of it from MY dreams was truly an epiphany that morning. I’ve had more chapters since then, feel I am in one right now, but I’ve learned it’s amazing to get to choose! I love your thought that something doesn’t have to end abruptly for us to choose! ❤️
It took me a long time to get out of the victim mindset. For so long, I thought life was happening to me. I didn't stop to think I could take control, make different choices, and CHANGE things! What??? lol
Honestly, I think it was more that I got comfortable in that complacency. Because, as we all know, change can be uncomfortable at times and forces us to take action... but ohhh, the benefits can be so rewarding! 😊
Joy this is fantastic! Beautifully written and it is so true that gratitude doesn't ask us to pretend that any hurt experienced was wonderful due to a happier outcome after. I really like the fact that you saw this experience as a journey back to yourself.
You know that I so resonate with moving abroad and I too believe that this threshold crossed led me back to myself. I was also 35 when I left to move abroad, well 3+5 = 8, 8 is a number for new beginnings!
"Sometimes coming home is leaving."
I love your song, incredible voice and lyrics!!💜✨

Thank you, C Simone! You know it’s so lovely when a personal experience resonates with someone else. :) I think this platform is amazing for finding those ‘kindred spirits’ Anne of Green Gables always talked about!
